Nomadi ry has chosen a versatile dance expert to lead the community. Dance artist and Choreographer Jussi Väänänen will take on the role of part-time Executive Director at the beginning of November.
Jussi Väänänen is a ten-time Finnish champion in Latin dance. After his competitive career ended, Väänänen became interested in performing arts and began creating his own works based on couple dance with his partner Katja Koukkula. The couple has also worked as choreographers at, among others, the Oulu, Turku and Lahti City Theatres, the Finnish National Opera and Dance Theatre Hurjaruuth. At the same time, Väänänen has run his own business with his partner, done TV work and projects in the private sector.
Since 2012, Jussi Väänänen has worked as a contemporary dancer with several well-known Finnish choreographers, such as Milla Virtanen, Tuomo Railo and Alpo Aaltokoski. From Alpo Aaltokoski Company, Väänänen is known for the works Together, Take My Hand, Kadotettu, Closed Doors, Brothers, Whirls and Okon Fuoko – See Me.
Jussi Väänänen will start a Nomadi’s Executive Director in a part-time position on November 3, 2025. Helmi Saksala will continue as part-time Head of Communications.
Nomadi ry is a Helsinki-based association founded in 1995 that manages the activities of the dance group Alpo Aaltokoski Company. The association aims to strengthen the societal status of dance art in Finland. Nomadi also acts as a background organization for 50+Dance Collective, founded in 2023, and for specific productions, for the Ukrainian dance group Ethno Contemporary Ballet, Akim Bakhtaoui’s street dance collective Will Funk For Food, and a number of freelance artists. Nomadi’s premises are located at the Cable Factory in Ruoholahti, Helsinki. The community’s activities are supported nyt the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Finnish Arts and Culture Agency) and the City of Helsinki.
